Sioux Center’s Mayor, Dennis Walstra, passed away at the age of 70, leaving a legacy of visionary leadership for the community.
Walstra served as Sioux Center’s mayor since January 2004 and, before that, he took office as a City Council member in January 2002. He has overseen city affairs ranging from the development of The Ridge Golf Course area, construction of Terrace View Event Center, and design of the new Siouxnami Waterpark, along with significant residential and commercial growth in Sioux Center.
“Mayor Walstra provided great vision and leadership working with the City Council and staff, and he had an obvious passion for this community,” said Sioux Center City Manager Scott Wynja.
Walstra also represented Sioux Center in national leadership roles including serving on committees for the American Public Power Association and the National League of Cities.
“Denny was always looking at the big picture and was a firm believer in progress through cooperation. He gave of his time and passion as a leader who always had our community’s best interests at heart,” said Sioux Center Utility Manager Murray Hulstein.
