Marissa Wielenga, of Sioux Center, has been awarded a $500 Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities scholarship. Wielenga will be a sophomore at Dordt University.
Students who are the child or grandchild of a person employed by one of IAMU’s 754 member utilities are eligible to apply for the statewide scholarship. Wielenga’s father works for the City of Sioux Center/Sioux Center Municipal Utilities, a member of IAMU.
“Congratulations to Marissa on this scholarship and recognition for your involvement and studies,” said Sioux Center Utilities Manager Murray Hulstein. “Sioux Center Municipal Utilities appreciates IAMU’s partnership and this scholarship opportunity.”
Marissa is the daughter of Mark and Jen Wielenga, of Sioux Center. She is pursuing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
“This year, we expanded our scholarship program to offer four general scholarships to the children or grandchildren of IAMU members. We felt this would be another great opportunity to give back to our members,” said Steve Marsh, IAMU Water Services Coordinator. “The review committee thought that Marissa was well deserving of one of these scholarships.”
To be awarded an IAMU scholarship, applicants must demonstrate a history of participation in school activities, groups, or community leadership; meet academic requirements; and attend a college or technical school in the state of Iowa.
“Thank you to IAMU for the scholarship opportunity and for the help continuing my education and pursing my dream of becoming a nurse!” Wielenga said.
