A detour for Highway 75 through traffic around Sioux Center will begin at the end of March as 2024 construction kicks off.
This marks the second year of construction on Highway 75 in Sioux Center, rebuilding the highway with two lanes of traffic in each direction, center turn lanes, medians, and sidewalks – all focused on safety, function, and showcasing Sioux Center’s character. This is a joint project with the Iowa Department of Transportation and the City of Sioux Center.
The detour begins south of Sioux Center at 420th St (south of South Ridge Travel Plaza and Sioux Feed) and heads west 3 miles to Garfield Ave., then north to Carmel, then east on 360th St. to Highway 75, just north of the Wayside Chapel and Dordt Agriculture Stewardship Center. A business access route will be marked midway through the detour. This detour will be in place during the construction months of 2024, 2025 and 2026. The plan is to reopen Highway 75 to through traffic each winter.
“Full-closure of the work area will provide more safety during this phase of construction. It also allows for more focused work on each area, with the goal being to minimize the time each property doesn’t have direct access,” said Utilities Manager Murray Hulstein.
Local traffic will still be able to continue into Sioux Center on Highway 75 from the north and south to drive to restaurants, stores, schools, and other destinations.
For 2024, construction on Highway 75 is planned to start around 13th St. S. (near Sioux Center Dental) and work north toward about 5th or 4th St. S., (near Bethel Christian Reformed Church) this year. Pavement removal and utility work between 13th St. S and 12th St. S is planned to begin first. This work is the beginning of Phase 2 construction for Highway 75. Phase 2 includes 13th St. S to 12th St. N. and will continue in 2025 and 2026.
The final paving of the Phase 1 area, from 20th St. S to 13th St. S, is set to take place in later spring. Completion of that area, including landscaped medians, is anticipated this year.
All construction timelines are weather dependent.
