Because paving the east lanes of the first phase of Highway 75 construction will now take place in spring 2024, crews will be working to improve safety for winter travel in this area.
“The goal has been to pave the east side prior to winter, but according to the working days allowed on this project, the contract deadline for Phase 1 is not until 2024,” said Sioux Center Utilities Manager Murray Hulstein. “With the weather turning cold, paving the east lanes will wait until spring. Now our focus is to prepare the Phase 1 area for winter travel.”
The City of Sioux Center and Iowa Department of Transportation, which are partners on this project, and the lead contractor, Godbersen-Smith Construction, are working together to modify the area to facilitate safe traffic flow and snow clearing through winter.
Project completion for Phase 1, from 20th St. S. to 13th St. S, is still scheduled for 2024, including paving the east lanes, adding the center turn lane, medians, median landscaping, and final sidewalk/trail connections. Phase 2 of the project, from 13th Street S. to 12th Street N., will take place in 2024-26.
In all, the Highway 75 reconstruction project in Sioux Center totals about 2.5 miles, replacing the aging pavement of Highway 75 and rebuilding it in an enhanced 4-lane design focused on safety, function, and showcasing Sioux Center’s character.
