With safety in mind, the City of Sioux Center is adding “no parking” signs along the north side of 12th Street NE where it runs along the youth soccer and recreation fields.
“We’ve had people request that we look at ways to improve the safety on this busy road. When there are a lot of vehicles parked along the side of the street, there is more risk of children running out between cars into traffic,” Sioux Center Utilities Manager Murray Hulstein said. “This is an opportunity to improve safety in an area where a lot of children are present.”
With the new signs, there is no on-street parking between 7th Ave and 8th Ave NE on 12th Street NE. People attending games at the youth recreation fields can park in the nearby parking lots along the east and south sides of the fields.
“Parked cars block the view of kids who might go out on the road and also the view of drivers traveling along 12th Street to be able to see when people are crossing that street,” said Sioux Center Street Department Head Harlan Rus. “We are encouraging people to use the parking lots there for more safety.”
The signs were installed this past week and are now in effect.
